NEW MEXICO WRITERS News:
SANTA FE — New Mexico Poet Laureate Levi Romero will give the keynote address at the 4th Annual New Mexico Writers Dinner Thursday, April 28, at La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe.
Romero will share teaching stories from his decades of classroom instruction on writing. Romero is an Assistant Professor in the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department at the University of New Mexico.
“We are delighted to have a writing legend from New Mexico, our own Poet Laureate, to be our keynote speaker at our annual writers dinner,” Carmella Padilla said, chair of the New Mexico Writers board of directors. “Levi’s work is deeply rooted in New Mexico and speaks to the sense of community that New Mexico Writers hopes to foster among writers throughout the state.”
This year’s dinner also features the recipients of New Mexico Writers grants in 2020, 2021 and 2022. These diverse and talented writers were chosen to receive grants that support new works or works in progress, representing communities from throughout New Mexico.
“Our mission is to encourage voices that reflect the true diversity of our state,” executive director James McGrath Morris said. “This dinner brings the parties together to celebrate that diversity.”
Proceeds from the annual dinner help fund the grant making program. Recipients may use the grants to support their work as needed, including tuition for a writing-related program, mentorship, travel, research costs or other expenses. Since the program’s inception, New Mexico Writers has awarded nearly $30,000 in grants to writers statewide working in a variety of genres.
This year’s dinner will give guests the option of sitting at tables with writers in their genre, such as fiction, poetry and more. An online auction will also take place, including works of art and dinners at private Santa Fe homes presided over by notable authors.
