This month, and going forward every month, focuses on both new and old. People often discuss what new books are being published, what the hottest book of the month is, and how their reading list continues to get longer by the minute because of the recommendations they get for new reads. It really is too easy to get pulled into the “Most Popular Today” lists. However, it is important to take the time to appreciate quality writing no matter when it was published.

‘The Goldfinch’ by Donna Tartt

This fiction novel is a sweeping story of survival, obsession, the meaning of home, self-invention, identity, the depth of love, fate and creating your destiny. It is beautifully written and absolutely captivates its readers.

This novel was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2014 as well as the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. It has also since been turned into a movie. Available at major booksellers.

‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ by Laura Dave

“Protect her.” This is the last message Hannah received from her husband, Owen, before he disappeared. Despite the confusion from this note, she knew it was about Owen’s 16-year-old daughter, Bailey. This is only the beginning of the mystery that is going to fall open at their feet from her as shortly after receiving this note, it is announced that Owen’s company is under investigation by the FBI. His boss of him is arrested, Hannah’s calls go unanswered, a US marshal and FBI agents arrive at their home, which all brings Hannah and Bailey to realize they do not quite know who Owen really is.

This mystery thriller novel dives into what lengths someone is willing to take to protect the people they love the most. It also gives the reader a chance to see what someone might be willing to do to uncover the truth. And it doesn’t hurt that part of this novel is set in Austin, a major city neighboring Fort Hood.

This book was published in 2021, but has consistently been ranked in the “Most Read” lists in the last few weeks. If you enjoy mysteries, suspense and thrillers, then this is absolutely the book for you. The plot twists are breathtaking and the writing is captivating. Available at major booksellers.
