QU Professor authors first book on reverse osmosis desalination in the Gulf

Doha: Qatar University (QU) has published the first book on reverse osmosis (RO) desalination in the Gulf region titled: “Reverse Osmosis Systems: Design, Optimization and Troubleshooting Guide”, published by Elsevier, the largest Science publisher.

The book was released in December 2021 and is available online. The book is authored by Prof. Syed Javaid Zaidi, and co-authored with Haleema Saleem from the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar University.

Water security has been identified as one of the grand challenges of Qatar National Vision 2030.

“The book, as written by a leading expert, provides a high-quality overview on RO desalination from Qatar and demonstrates the progress in this area. It is an essential reference for professionals, researchers, and students in environmental engineering practices and related fields. It is also a helpful tool for managers and official decision-makers that face water scarcity issues worldwide,” said Prof. Mariam Al Maadeed, Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies at Qatar University.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is an advanced technology whose application is fast growing. This book describes in-depth knowledge of designing and operating RO systems for water desalination. It also provides guidelines that will improve the performance of RO systems for water desalination. So far, there is no dedicated book on RO systems design, performance and troubleshooting, published from the Gulf region, with special focus on RO desalination studies carried out in this region.

The book is timely as Qatar desalination industry is shifting from thermal based desalination to membrane based reverse osmosis desalination technology.

The book covers latest information on the design of reverse osmosis system, its operation and troubleshooting and can be used as perfect tool for design engineers, plant operators and technicians responsible for RO system design, operation, and maintenance.

“The book will help develop technological solutions and enhance the production of RO desalination plants to contribute to the water production of the nation,” noted Dr. Mohammed Irshidat, Acting Director of Center for Advanced Materials at QU.

CAM is the premier research center of Qatar University engaged in cutting-edge research in nanomaterials for energy and environment.

The center has been dedicated to providing unique excellence in the field of material technologies and offers knowledgeable assistance to the local oil and gas, desalination and water treatment, processing industries as well as the Qatari society.

The materials research contributes to economic progress by developing advanced materials for new technologies and enhancing the performance of established technologies.

CAM has strong collaboration with the Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) to optimize the efficiency of water desalination technologies. CAM in collaboration with QEWC established a Water Technology Unit (WTU) at QU which will addresses current and emerging issues relating to water quality and scarcity.

The research program of the Unit aligns with QU’s research priorities and coincides with the strategic goals of the QNV 2030 which targets the expansion of Qatar’s desalination capacity.

In addition, its goal is to build its capacity and develop local expertise to support the water desalination and treatment industry in Qatar.
