Watchmen Boss Damon Lindelof Reportedly Writing a Star Wars Movie

If murmurs around Buena Vista St. are to be believed, writer Damon Lindelof — best known for his work on lost, The Leftovers and HBO’s Watchmen — could be next in line to tackle the starwars universe.

According to The Anklera persistent rumor over the last couple of months has been that Lindelof is working on a new starwars movie for Lucasfilm. At this time, however, no information regarding the supposed project’s plot is available. It is also unknown if Lindelof has a co-writer or if there is a director attached to the rumored film.

At the premiere of the 2015 Disney film tomorrowlandwhich Lindelof penned the screenplay for alongside Brad Bird, the former suggested that he would be interested in doing a starwars movie, though this came with a caveat. “I would certainly never say never, but right now, whether tomorrowland succeeds or fails, I’m committed to a space of trying to make something more original,” Lindelof told The Hollywood Reporter.

None, Lindelof later awning fandom that he would indeed like to work on a starwars or Marvel project in the future. “And, at some point, but certainly not in the immediate future, I feel like I would love to do something in the starwars universe,” he said. “Maybe a decade from now when I would no longer be blamed for ruining it. That would be a hoot.”

The Ankler‘s sources say that Lindelof may very well have manifested a starwars gig into existence. At any rate, however, Lindelof’s representatives declined to comment on the matter. Similarly, Lucasfilm did not issue a response when asked about Lindelof’s potential involvement in its flagship franchise.

While the starwars franchise has shifted its focus to the small screen in recent years, there are a number of big-screen projects set in the galaxy far, far away currently in the works at Lucasfilm. For instance, the Patty Jenkins-directed film Rogue Squadron is scheduled for release on Dec. 22, 2023. Meanwhile, two untitled starwars films are scheduled for release on Dec. 19, 2025 and Dec. 17, 2027, respectively.

A number of other unspecified film projects set in the starwars universe are said to still be in the works as well, such as a new trilogy from Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson. Additionally, Marvel boss Kevin Feige is developing a starwars movie to be written by Michael Waldron, while Thor: Ragnarök director Taika Waititi is confirmed to be directing a starwars film that he is also co-writing with Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

Lindelof recently earned widespread acclaim for his work on Watchmen, an HBO limited series that serves as a sequel to the seminal DC comic book of the same name by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. In 2020, HBO’s Watchmen won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series. Additionally, Lindelof and co-writer Cord Jefferson won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special for their work on Watchmen‘s sixth episode, “This Extraordinary Being.” Back in 2005, ABC’s lost — which Lindelof co-created with JJ Abrams and Jeffrey Lieber — won Outstanding Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Lindelof’s other television writing credits include Nash Bridges, Crossing Jordan and Phineas y Ferb. In addition to tomorrowlandhe has also co-written such films as Cowboys & Aliens, Prometheus, Star Trek Into Darkness and world war z. More recently, he’s been running the writer’s room for Peacock’s Mrs Davis with Tara Hernandez. Ace The Ankler notes, however, Lindelof has “kept a suspiciously low profile since the stunning success of Watchmen.”
