X-Men’s Most Underrated Hero Was Rick Sanchez BEFORE Rick & Morty

Rick and Morty’s Rick Sanchez has proven to be a one-of-a-kind character, but an X-Men hero very similar to Rick was introduced way before the show.

The most underrated and one of the lesser-known X Men heroes proved himself to be Rick Sanchez before Rick and Morty ever aired. Rick and Morty originated from a webseries The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti which was a spoof on Back to the Future. While Rick and Morty‘s origin has nothing to do with the X-Men, one Marvel Comics’ mutant exhibits the same brilliance, cynicism, and love of mind-altering substances as Rick Sanchez, but he was around long before the Rick and Morty character.

James Bradley aka Doctor Nemesis made his first appearance in 1941’s Lightning Comics #6 but was retconned and included in the main Marvel Comics’ continuity in 1993’s The Invaders #1 by Roy Thomas and Dave Hoover. Doctor Nemesis is a mutant and possesses a self-evolved intellect, meaning he is a genius of the highest caliber and only gets smarter every day. Bradley has also given himself bio-technological enhancements, primarily in his eyes, giving himself the added abilities of x-ray vision, hyper-optics, and mutant gene detection.

Doctor Nemesis is similar to Rick and Morty‘s Rick Sanchez in a number of ways. Firstly, their levels of intellect are on par with one another as both can create anything they put their minds to. While Rick has a portal gun to travel to different dimensions, Doctor Nemesis built himself a time machine. Rick has given himself robotic augmentations in the form of, what he describes as, ‘Inspector Gadget’ limbs, and Bradley made himself enhanced eyes. Not only are they basically equally as smart, but they share a few personality traits as well. Doctor Nemesis has made it clear in more recent X Men comics that his one weakness is law and ethics as he just doesn’t care about them or take them seriously. Rick Sanchez is famous for having this frame of mind and, on numerous occasions, even shares his view of thinking he’s above the law with the President of the United States himself.

X-Men hero was Rick BEFORE Rick & Morty.

While the two share some of their more fantastical and cynical characteristics with one another, they also both share in psychoactive substances. Doctor Nemesis, in the current X Men comics, is literally growing mushrooms out of his own head in an effort to create something that could be useful to the mutants on Krakoa in whatever form that ends up taking. While Rick doesn’t grow hallucinogens out of his head, he does ingest a number of drugs throughout Rick and Mortysometimes to give himself a boost either mentally or physically but usually all in an effort just to have a good time.

Aside from intellectual and personality similarities, Rick and James have a similar look to them as well, both of them being older while simultaneously showing no signs of slowing down. All-in-all, Rick Sanchez and Doctor Nemesis might as well be one and the same, except Doctor Nemesis has been around since the ’40s, meaning X Men‘s most underrated hero was Rick Sanchez before Rick and Morty.
