When the Chicago White Sox take the field to begin the 2022 season, a key player will be missing from the lineup. Tim Anderson will sit out the first two games of the upcoming campaign due to a suspension resulting from a late-2021 benches-clearing incident. That scuffle took place against the Detroit Tigers, which just happens to be the White Sox opponent to open the 2022 slate.

The news of Anderson’s suspension length — in addition to a $10K fine —broke this morning. The White Sox shortstop didn’t want to dwell on the punishment, but he did provide an exceptional quote upon discussing the ramifications with reporters this afternoon.

“I’ve accepted what they’ve given me, and I can’t really do anything about it…It’s cool,” Anderson said of the suspension and fine.

“You had said a while ago you were hoping to get there for Opening Day. Did they kind of shoot that down?” one reporter asked as a follow-up question.

“No…I’m gonna be in Chicago. I don’t care about Detroit fans. But I’ll be at Opening Day in Chicago for sure,” Anderson replied with a grin and a laugh.

Taken out of context, Tim Anderson’s response may come off as an attack directed at a divisional foe. But in reality, the Sox shortstop highlighted how much he is looking forward to being in the lineup when the South Side faithful packs Guaranteed Rate Field for Chicago’s home opener on April 12.

Anderson is a White Sox fan favorite for a plethora of reasons. He’s a fierce competitor, a sparkplug of a leadoff hitter, and a clubhouse mainstay. But his lively personality and willingness to speak his mind further bolster that affection.

White Sox fans would have greeted Tim Anderson with a roaring ovation at the home opener regardless of this exchange. Now, it might just be a little bit louder and possibly include a few “Detroit sucks” chants.
