Pro wrestler opens new gaming and collectibles shop in Taunton

TAUNTON — Professional wrestler King Leon the 6th has a new home for his throne.

Steven Baker, who plays King Leon the 6th in the wrestling ring, is now the proprietor of The King’s Court on Bay Street in the Whittenton neighborhood of Taunton. The King’s Court is a gaming and collectibles store and tabletop gaming facility set in a king’s court, and Baker’s vision is that of a welcoming space, or “hang out,” for fans and fanatics of the gaming, comic book and fantasy end of pop culture.

Baker, a Brockton native and Taunton resident, has spent recent years entertaining crowds as King Leon — reportedly from the Kingdom of Beheadya — with the likes of New World Wrestling Extreme, Lucky Pro Wrestling and PPW Entertainment. Now, several years’ worth of beatings for the worse, he’s tapped his childhood love of gaming to start something new.

He’s taking some time off from wrestling, currently, to get the shop up and running, but doubts he’s “retired” from the ring quite yet.

“I’m a giant child, honestly,” Baker said in a burst of laughter.

“The gaming is from my childhood — Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc, etc — and I still love it. Straight up, that’s kind of where I’m at. I’ve been into gaming my entire life and I want to share that with other people who love it.”

The King’s Court combines Baker’s wrestling personality with that love of gaming. And when Baker says “gaming,” he means video games, board games and table-top games like Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. Most games.

The price of fame:Fall River foods were served up on these TV shows. Here’s what it did for local businesses.

“It all came through from wrestling, with the vision of the king thing, and I had all the stuff to make this what it is,” he said.

“As you can see, there is a throne. The throne I had from wrestling, the crown from wrestling… and it all kind of fits with what I’ve done for the last five or six years in the wrestling world.

“Now I figure I’m on to a new venture in my life.”

In the front of the store is the retail operation and products; it also offers snacks for hungry gamers and custom-designed T-shirts with a quick turnaround time. In the back is The King’s Court, with a throne at one end and three large wooden gaming tables. It’s adorned in banners and flags featuring more gaming and fantasy icons, and the room takes on the look of a medieval court.

“It’s kind of everything that a nerd can look for when it comes to a gaming store. It’s video game characters, and Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Digimon, Funko Pops, and you can go on and on.”

Baker uses the word “nerd” as a term of endearment and includes himself as a proud member of the club.

“We all know what we are. It is what it is. It’s a compliment at this point,” he said.
