Furniture deliveryman shocked to deliver furniture to his brother-in-law and a woman who was not his wife | tracey folly

*This is a work of nonfiction based on actual events as told to me by a family friend, who experienced them firsthand; used with permission.

It was a warm day in September when our family friend, a deliveryman for the local appliance store, made a routine delivery to a customer who lived out of town. He rang the doorbell, and a woman answered.

She signed for the delivery, and when the delivery was complete, she asked our family friend to wait because she wanted to get some money for a tip.

That’s when things got interesting.

“Wait here. I’ll go get my boyfriend,” she said. “I’m sure he has some cash.”

The woman called her boyfriend’s name from the doorway, and our friend thought the name sounded familiar. Then again, there are plenty of people walking around with the same name, so he didn’t think that much of it—until the man walked into the room.

The woman went to get the cash, but she came back with something else entirely: her boyfriend. And not just any boyfriend. It was our family friend’s brother-in-law.

He was wearing a bathrobe, and his hair looked disheveled as if he had just woken up. It was clear that he had been sleeping, and our friend soon realized why.

The delivery man blinked his eyes in surprise. It was his brother-in-law of him, as in: the man who was married to his sister. The two men exchanged glances, but neither of them acknowledged the fact that they knew each other.

Needless to say, our family friend was shocked. He didn’t know what to say or do, so he just stood there awkwardly while the all-too-familiar man handed him money.

The man in the bathrobe passed the deliveryman, his brother-in-law, a twenty-dollar bill. “Thank you,” he said quietly.

His brother-in-law tipped an imaginary hat. “No,” he said, “thank you.”

And with that, our family friend left the house, still in shock from what he had just witnessed. He never said a word to anyone in his family about what he had seen, and we’re not sure if he ever told his sister about him. We like to think that he did, and that she got a good laugh out of it. Either way, they’re divorced now.

He caught her cheating on him with another man.

We always wondered what she would say if she knew her brother had caught her husband cheating with another woman. And if our family friend ever told his sister about what he saw, we like to think she got a good laugh out of it. After all, they’re divorced now. So does it even matter anymore?

It’s all water under the bridge, but I still wonder what she would think if she knew.

Would she feel shocked? Disappointed? Or would she simply shrug it off and say, “I knew he was no good.”

This incident happened many years ago, and she has since remarried. As far as we all know, she’s happy now. That’s all that matters.

Do you have a story about an awkward encounter or embarrassing moment? Or do you have a story about something unexpected happening during a delivery? I’d love to hear it. Share it in the comments below.
