news release

SYRACUSE — The Syracuse Public Library’s adult book club will read “The Higher Power of Lucky” by Susan Patron as its April pick.

Believing that her French guardian is about to abandon her to an orphanage in the city, 10-year-old Lucky runs away from her small town with her beloved dog by her side in order to trek across the Mojave Desert in this Newbery Medal-winning novel from Susan Patron.

Discussions will occur at 6 pm Tuesday, April 19, via Zoom and at 1 pm Thursday, April 21, in the downstairs meeting room.

Copies of “The Higher Power of Lucky” are available at the Syracuse Public Library. Patrons can also check out a digital audiobook on Libby/OverDrive.

For information about the adult book club or to receive a Zoom invitation, contact Becky at [email protected]

Clay Classes Return

Clay art classes return to Syracuse Public Library at 5 pm Tuesday, May 3. A master clay artist, Elizabeth Wamsley, is showing a transfer technique for sgraffito, a way of incising a design on a piece of pottery. Wamsley is bringing a premade dish that participants will decorate with sgraffito.
Sign up is open for the 12 spots available. Call the library at (574) 457-3022, email Becky at [email protected] or stop by in-person. The program is supported by the Indiana Arts Commission and first-time attendees are free.

Homeschool Program And Storytime Continue

The homeschool program continues through the month of April at 10:30 am each Friday. Children are invited to attend April 15 to learn about sign language. Then on April 22, the subject will be cloud formation patterns. The last homeschool program will be held April 29, and children will decorate flowerpots.

Storytime for preschoolers and toddlers will occur at 10:30 am each Friday, too. There will be no Wiggly and Wacky Storytime during April.

Decluttering Support Group Meets

The Decluttering Support Group invites anyone who wants to talk about their relationship with things to a meeting at noon on Thursday, April 14, in the downstairs meeting room.

This month participants will share their successes in rehoming their items.

This group offers a nonjudgmental space and is confidential. The doors close shortly after the start time.
