Walmart employees horrified when customer returns used underwear for years and gets away with it | tracey folly

*This is a work of nonfiction based on actual events as told to me by my mother, who experienced them firsthand; used with permission.

They were yellow and stained, according to my mother.

My mother witnessed a lot of questionable behavior during her decade as a Walmart employee, but one of the most memorable things she ever saw was the elderly man who consistently returned used underwear.

“The people who worked in the return department just let him get away with it because it was easier than arguing with him,” she said. “By giving him what he wanted the first time, they created a monster. He didn’t stop.”

My mother said her coworkers felt horrified at first, but they quickly grew accustomed to seeing the customer with his neatly packaged used underwear. They simply disposed of it and moved on with their workday.

So where did he get so many pairs of old underwear? Here’s what my mother and her coworkers figured out.

The customer purchased a package containing six pairs of new briefs, brought it home, and neatly packaged six old pairs of underwear in the bag, sealing it shut with tape. Then he brought the used underwear back to the store, claiming they were defective. The clerk allowed him to take a fresh package of brand new underwear in exchange for the old underwear… and a habit was born.

The man must have emptied his underwear drawer six pairs at a time until he had replaced every pair of old underwear in his collection with bright white new pairs of briefs.

“Are they clean?” I asked my mother.

“Yes,” she said. “They were clean, but they were stained and yellowed with age.”

After his initial success in exchanging his old underwear for fresh ones, the man continued freshening up his collection of undergarments over the course of the next several years.

“He didn’t do it as often after the initial batch,” my mother explained, “but whenever he needed new underwear, there he was with a package of old ones ready to go.”

My mother has plenty of other Walmart-related stories, but this one is the most memorable to me because it’s just so weird. I can’t imagine anyone else doing something like this, but maybe that’s why the man could get away with it for so long. He was an oddity, and no one wanted to take the time to argue with him about his used underwear.

So he got away with it for years.

All I can say for sure is that it was an ingenious way to get new underwear without having to purchase them himself. And as long as he kept his original plastic packaging from him, he was golden.

As wacky as this story may seem, it’s still one of the more tame things my mother saw during her time as a Walmart employee. I’m just glad she could share it with me so that I can now share it with all of you.

The story of the man who exchanged used underwear for fresh ones at Walmart is one that has amused and perplexed my mother for years. How could he get away with it? Is there a moral to the story?

Whatever your thoughts on the matter, this bizarre tale is one that is sure to stick in your mind. Have you seen anything like this at your retail job? Thanks for reading. Please comment below.
