2022 RBC Heritage fantasy picks, rankings, sleepers: Expert says back Collin Morikawa, fade Patrick Cantlay

Another strong field is set to tee off Thursday when the PGA Tour hits Hilton Head Island, SC, for the 2022 RBC Heritage. The Harbor Town Golf Links is a favorite among PGA Tour players, and five of the top 10 golfers in the world are heading over from Augusta to take on the challenge. Three of those players finished in the top 10 at last week’s Masters – Cameron Smith, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas. Morikawa finished fifth at Augusta, and Thomas was tied for eighth, and they are the 14-1 co-favorites in the latest 2022 RBC Heritage odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Smith tied for third at Augusta and is priced at 14-1, followed by Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay, both listed at 16-1.

Will Thomas break through for his first victory since the 2021 Players Championship and make him worth the price for your 2022 RBC Heritage Fantasy golf picks? Would a hot player like Shane Lowry (25-1) or Corey Conners (28-1) put you in a better spot to win? Before making any Fantasy golf picks or betting on the 2022 RBC Heritage, be sure you check out the Fantasy golf projections and rankings from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.

Gates is a writer for 247Sports and has covered a range of sports for nearly five years. He has followed golf closely for much longer and has a profound knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the course and in fantasy sports.

At last week’s Masters, eight of his 20 picks finished in the top eight, including winner Scottie Scheffler and runner-up Rory McIlroy. In fact, the top four golfers on the final leader board were among his picks from him. He noted that Scheffler was playing the best of anyone and that he expected him to be a contender. And of course he was, winning his fourth tournament in less than two months.

Gates was also on the money on Shane Lowry, who quietly stormed into a tie for third on Sunday. “Don’t overthink it. He’s playing phenomenal golf, and that should continue,” the expert said of the Irishman.

The golf expert has been on a roll all season. At the Valspar Championship, seven of his picks finished in the top 12. He was on the money at Phoenix, where his five top selections all ended up in the top 10. And he nailed his picks at the Sentry, with four of his top seven picks posting top-five finishes, and he duplicated that at the Hero World Challenge. Anyone who has followed Gates is way up.

Now, Gates has analyzed the RBC Heritage field and just released his coveted fantasy golf rankings for this week’s event. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings from him and RBC Heritage picks at SportsLine.

2022 RBC Heritage golf expert picks

One player Gates is really high on for this week is Morikawa, who has been an almost automatic top-10 finisher. He has been in the top 10 in six of his eight tournaments of him, with five of those in the top five. He has been a runner-up twice. He should be rolling in with a smile still on his face after closing out his final-round 67 on Sunday at Augusta by holing out from the sand, right after Rory McIlroy did the same. He is in the top 10 in several key categories, including driving accuracy, greens in regulation and scoring average (69,890), and he is 31st in strokes gained putting.

On the other hand, the expert is fading Cantlay, who has four top-10 finishes this season but none in the past two months. The FedEx Cup champ tied for 39th at Augusta, where he shot a third-round 79, and he also had a 77 at the Players on his way to missing the cut. Gates believes the 25-year-old will start turning things around this week, but he isn’t putting a lot of stock in him and ranks Cantlay outside his top 10. He is hitting a fair amount of greens (81st on tour at 67.5 percent in regulation), but he isn’t getting it close, averaging 39 feet away (164th).
