Mason Mount hails Chelsea teammate’s display in FA Cup

Mason Mount heavily praised Chelsea teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek for his weekend performance at Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Chelsea booked their spot in another domestic cup final this season by overcoming Crystal Palace 2-0 on Sunday.

Mount, along with Loftus-Cheek, were both on the scoresheet with second-half goals.

Loftus-Cheek broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with an excellent half-volley against the side he previously spent a successful loan at a few years ago. Mount then wrapped up the cup tie with 15 minutes to go with his side-footed effort inside the box.

It all means that the Blues are going to battle Liverpool once again in May’s FA Cup final. The two locked horns earlier in the year during the Carabao Cup final, which the Merseyside club eventually won on penalties.

Mount gave a glowing verdict of his Chelsea teammate in his post-match interview, explaining Loftus-Cheek made a big difference when he came off the bench to replace an injured Mateo Kovacic midway through the first half.

“I’m absolutely buzzing for Rubes. He’s worked so hard to get back and to get back in the shape he is now. He’s a top, top player. He comes in on a difficult game, and steps up, and plays very well. He’s a big player for us. Dominant, the way he drives the ball forward it helps us move up the pitch. He was brilliant today when he came on,” Mount told ITV 1 (6:45pm, 17 April).

Great English core at Chelsea

England boss Gareth Southgate, who was in the stands at Wembley today, must’ve enjoyed what he saw from several individuals.

Mount and Reece James are established England internationals that once again made important contributions. In addition, Loftus-Cheek put on an eye-catching display, but you feel it’s still a long, long road back for him to return to the Three Lions squad.

If you were picking the eventual successor to Cesar Azpilicueta as the club’s captain, Mount and James are two names that should be at the top of the shortlist by the way they consistently lead by example.
