You Can Expect More DC Comics-Based Games in the Near Future

A recent report hints at the possibility the comic book giant plans to not only overhaul its film division, but also bolster its gaming sector too.

After formally announcing a decision to overall its film division, it now appears DC plans to change up its entire approach to entertainment outside of the comics — including adding more emphasis on gaming.

In an exclusive to Variety, multiple sources revealed the new owners of DC plan to complete overhaul of the comic book giant’s approach to entertainment as a whole. Less than a week after Discovery merged with WarnerMedia in a $43 billion deal, the newly established Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly revealed plans to create a more cohesive whole between Warner Bros.-owned DC movies, streaming shows and the creative division itself. At the same time, the newly-minted company’s CEO, David Zaslav, is currently seeking DC’s answer to Marvel Studios President/Marvel CCO Kevin Feige to make DC stories as wildly successful as Marvel’s. Another important feature of this report is the apparent consideration of gaming with a desire to bolster that part of the company.

According to insiders, Zaslav believes the merger’s success remains on the ability of the company to unlock the full potential of the DC universe. The insiders also stated that, though DC has found recent success with some of its newer films, such as Aquaman and batman, the movies lack any connecting thread, be it tonal or in terms of marketing or creative strategy. There’s also an interest in reviving the Superman franchise, as well as exploring the possibilities with second-billed characters, such as Harley Quinn and the Joker.

What this means for the potential for DC-related games remains unclear. The company had great success with past titles, such as 2009’s critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum, which received several best game of the year awards and even held the Guinness World Record for “most critically acclaimed superhero videogame” until its sequel, Arkham City, beat it. Currently, there is the long-lived DC Universe Onlinewhich has a new update coming soon titled Dark Knights. Besides the new story, DC Universe Online also expects a significant graphics upgrade sometime next year.

Perhaps the most exciting potential for this rests in the Arkham Asylum universe with the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game features the now-famous DC villains gallery facing off against a brainwashed Justice League. The new game is set five years after the company’s last title, Batman: Arkham VR. Plans for a “hardcore violent” Suicide Squad game first appeared in 2010, but that game was subsequently canceled in 2016. The recent popularity of the suicide squad films seemed to reignite interest in a game based on the beloved comics.

Initially slated for a 2022 release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was recently delayed to Spring 2023. Despite the delay, the game remains among the most highly anticipated upcoming releases.
