Boom! Studios’ The Hidden Planeswalker Brings Magic The Gathering to Comics

In association with Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, Boom! Studios brings Magic: The Gathering to life in a new series titled The Hidden Planeswalker.

This article contains spoilers for Magic: The Hidden Planeswalker #1, on sale from Boom! Studios.

In 1993, a mathematician launched the card game fans know as Magic: The Gathering. For nearly thirty years, this franchise has grown, with new decks and cards being produced regularly. Game mechanics aside, there is also a massive storytelling element to each set that hooks people in. With so much lore, comic book writers can draw inspiration from the game and translate it into something readers can digest.

Boom! Studios, in association with Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, has launched another Magic: The Gathering comic book series. Magic: The Hidden Planeswalker #1 (written by Mairghread Scott with art by Fabiana Mascolo and colors by Francesco Segala) is the latest story to be told within the Magic universe.

The forthcoming four issue miniseries will be filled with characters and places from the popular card game. Fans who play the game will recognize places like Strixhaven and Amonkhet as well as popular planeswalkers such as Jace Beleren and Ghost Assassin Kaya. It takes place after the events of Magic: Master of Metal (written by Mairghread Scott with art by Jorge Coehlo, French Charlemagne and Jacques Salomon), where powerful necromancer Liliana Vess is teaching at Strixhaven.

She’s content with this new position, teaching students the basics of necromancy and the ethics behind it, as she has gone through a major character arc to redeem herself. Two planeswalkers, Kaya and Ral, interrupt a conversation she was having. She doesn’t want to be bothered unless the multiverse is at stake. Unfortunately for her, it is. A creature named Marit Lage is being lured out of the Blind Eternities, where it was once trapped. They have a plan, but it requires an undead army.

Fans may recognize Marit Lage as a being during Magic’s Eldrazi series. This creature along with its Eldrazi counterparts were inspired by Cthulhu and Lovecraftian lore. It’s apparent that Liliana knows more about the creature than she lets on, and agrees without question to help.

This series and the one-shot tie in with the current running Magic comics, with the battle on Amonkhet taking place between issues #9 and #10 of Magic. Without recapping the battle, the panels cut to their costly victory, and Liliana is allowed to return to Strixhaven. However, Tezzeret greets her in her classroom with the intention of extracting a memory of her from her. He is unsuccessful, as Liliana uses undead grubs to take him out of her. Could he be the hidden planeswalker? What are his plans for him with the Marit Lage? These are all questions left unanswered by the end of this comic.

With all of these stories happening at once, it’s interesting to see from other character’s perspectives. Each one has their own agenda, their own goals they want to achieve. Between the characters, the rich settings, and immersive storytelling, Boom! Studios Magic: The Hidden Planeswalker and all its affiliated comics have brought a new element to this beloved game. Magic: The Hidden Planeswalker #2 comes out May 25, 2022.
