With a new season of Young Sheldon in the works, it can be fun to look back on the fully grown Sheldon Cooper that fans know and loves in The Big Bang Theory. There is no doubt that Sheldon is one of the most iconic sitcom characters of recent years, and part of his charm comes from his unique ways of handling the relationships in his life.
Sheldon’s romance with Amy is certainly non-conventional, but love is most certainly at its core. Sheldon adores Amy and would do just about anything for her, even if he sometimes has a peculiar way of showing it. Sheldon Cooper is a great boyfriend, and he says some endearing quotes to prove that.
The Relationship Agreement
“With The Understanding That Nothing Changes Whatever, Physical Or Otherwise, I Would Not Object To Us No Longer Characterizing You As Not My Girlfriend.”
One of the ways that Amy matures in The Big Bang Theory is by realizing her own worth. When she decides that her relationship with Sheldon is not going anywhere and she goes for a date with Stuart, Sheldon realizes that it is time to lock Amy down by taking their relationship to the next level.
Of course, becoming an official pair means that Sheldon has to draft up an official relationship agreement. It also means that Sheldon has taken a huge step out of his comfort zone to say these words and enter a committed romantic relationship, but he does it because he loves her. Amy even manages to convince him to ask to go steady without the quadruple negative, and he obliges, like any good boyfriend would.
A Sweet Embarrassment
“I’m In A Boy-Girl Relationship With This Cute Little Lump Of Wool.”
When Amy starts a research project at the California Institute of Technology, Sheldon joins her and her colleagues for lunch. He says this sweet quote about Amy to the table of renowned scientists, much to his girlfriend’s dismay.
Even though Sheldon is very much embarrassing Amy with this line, it is still pleasant to hear him use such cute terms to describe his girlfriend. Most people would not love working in the same place as their significant other from her, but until his friends from her explain otherwise, Sheldon is willing to welcome her into his workplace from her with a display of pure affection that shows how she has her heart softened.
happy birthday amy
“Amy’s Birthday Present Will Be My Genitals.”
After years of being in a relationship, Sheldon decides that he is finally ready to consummate his love with Amy on her birthday. He finalizes this decision with this quote, which leads to the best-ever date nights between Sheldon and Amy.
Sheldon takes a long time to be ready for intimacy with Amy, and some may have thought that they would never see the day. When he makes the decision to sleep with her de ella per his own accord de ella and gives it to her as a birthday present because he knows how much it means to her, he speaks to the level of trust and understanding that he shares with her .
The Love Bug
“I Briefly Considered That I Had A Brain Parasite, But That Seems Even More Far-Fetched. The Only Conclusion Was Love.”
After Sheldon tells Amy that he loves her, she looks to be in complete disbelief. He reassures he really does love her, supplementing his comfort with this parasitic anecdote about how he initially dealt with his feelings with her.
Long-time viewers of The Big Bang Theory are no stranger to the fact that Sheldon is a hypochondriac who would almost always go for the scientific explanation over the emotional one. His ability to overcome the standard Sheldon Cooper train of thought and pinpoint romantic feelings that he has never had before speaks to how open he is to grow in this relationship.
A Heartworming Metaphor
“You’re My Heartworm. The Metaphorical Kind, Not The Poodle-Killing Kind.”
Sheldon gets the song “Darlin'” by The Beach Boys stuck in his head and spends the majority of an episode spiraling as he tries to figure it out. When he does eventually realize the song title, he also realizes that it found its way into his brain from him in the first place because it pinpoints his love from him for Amy.
Sheldon says this quote when he goes to win Amy back after coming to his Beach Boys-centric realization, and despite the sweet sentiment, the line is very Sheldon-y. Leave it to the theoretical physicist to involve an earworm-turned-dog-disease metaphor in his profession of love. This is part of what makes him such a great boyfriend–Even as he grows to welcome romance, he does not lose himself.
Sheldon’s Weak Spot
“Amy, I Excel At Many Things, But Getting Over You Wasn’t One Of Them.”
When Amy decides that she needs a break from the relationship, Sheldon takes it pretty hard. He tries his best to win her back from her, but when he finally accepts the end to their relationship, Amy is ready to be his girlfriend from her again. This quote is how he tells her that he simply cannot do it again.
Sheldon is not willing to admit many poor things about himself. In fact, one of the only failures that he acknowledges is his inability to do a pull-up as a child. So, the fact that he is willing to confess his struggle to get over Amy speaks to just how much she means to him. Luckily, he eventually realizes this, too, and the two are able to start up their relationship again.
“There Is Nothing In The World That Would Stop Me From Marrying You Tomorrow, Even Me From The Future Coming Back To Prevent The Wedding And The Subsequent Birth Of A Child Who Will Destroy Humanity.”
Naturally, when Amy asks Sheldon how he is feeling about their upcoming wedding, Sheldon uses a reference to time travel to drive in just how ready he is to make Amy his wife.
It would not be unlike Sheldon to get cold feet before committing to someone for the rest of his life, but out of a deep and abiding love, he cannot wait to marry her. He is so wholly committed that even time travel is not a threat to their love. When Amy explains that her future self would not stop them because Sheldon believes that time travel occurs in a closed loop (meaning he would have married her regardless), it only further solidifies his commitment to her. He responds with, “I love you so damn much.”
His First I Love You
“I Love You Too.”
Before The Big Bang Theory crew recreates prom, Amy begins rambling to Sheldon that she has something to tell him, and that she doesn’t want him to feel obliged to say it back. Sheldon, however, knows exactly what she wants to say, and he cuts her off with this quote before she can say it.
Technically, this makes Sheldon the first person in the relationship to say “I love you.” The physicist has never been one for warm and big-hearted displays, so there is also something very innocent, pure, and truthful about it. The simple expression of love is a huge step that shows how much he is willing to change for Amy, and Jim Parsons’ ability to communicate this is why his Emmy-winning performance is the best on him. The Big Bang Theory.
His Observations About Amy
“She Loves Medieval Literature. Chaucer’s Her Favorite. … Her Eyes Sparkle When She Watches Old French Movies, And I Enjoy How Harp Music Causes Her Fingers To Dance As If She’s Playing Along.”
When Sheldon is shopping for a Christmas gift for Amy, Bernadette tells him that her favorite gifts that Howard has given her have shown her how well he knows her. This is what Sheldon says when he reflects on what he knows about Amy.
This quote is a top-contender for the most beautiful things that Sheldon Cooper has ever said. It shows that while he may seem to be an emotionally distant lover, he pays so much attention to Amy. The woman who enters his life from her as “not his girlfriend from him” becomes the subject of detailed observations about the things that make her eyes sparkle and her fingers from her dance.
“Even If I Can’t Tell You Now How I Feel, I Will Spend My Life Showing You How Much I Love You.”
When the time finally comes for Sheldon and Amy to tie the knot after Sheldon proposes in one of the best episodes of The Big Bang TheorySheldon says this with complete and total sincerity as a part of his vows.
Any long-time fan of the show knows that Sheldon can oftentimes struggle to both understand others’ emotions and express his own. With this quote, he does both by acknowledging his own special way of showing love. Her decision to get married is big enough for the scientist, but the way that Amy has made him self-aware of his love language is a huge step that shows how much he is willing to grow for her.
