Warning! spoiler for The New Champion of Shazam #1 by DC Comics

DC’s new Shazam, Mary Marvel, stars in marvelous cover art from Joshua Middleton, as the artist beautifully captures the hero in a gorgeous portrait. In a newly revealed variant cover for The New Champion of Shazam #1 by DC Comics, a miniseries that will see Billy Batson’s sister take over the role of Shazam, Mary Marvel has never looked more beautiful as the cover captures the hero in breathtaking fashion.

Mary Marvel (real name Mary Bromfield) has been a part of Shazam’s adventures since the 1940s when the hero still used the moniker Captain Marvel. As Mary Marvel, she became an important sidekick and member of the Shazam family, often joining the popular DC Comics hero in some of his greatest battles. However, a new miniseries from DC Comics will give Mary the spotlight, as she becomes DC’s new Shazam in a series from Josie Campbell and Evan “Doc” Shaner, as she’ll take on the role after Billy Batson’s hero makes a sacrifice resulting in a new champion needed.

  • Mary Bromfield has always struggled to determine who she is outside her family…kinda hard to do when you’re all superheroes! Now, after Billy Batson’s heroic sacrifice, the power of Shazam has vanished, and she’s been left powerless. Most heroes would be distracted, but not Mary. It’s finally time for a voyage of self-discovery as she prepares for her freshman year of college and a civilian life. But nothing is ever truly normal for this young hero because she’s just been chosen as the new champion of Shazam! (At least according to a talking rabbit sent by her estranged brother to Ella Billy.) Will she embrace the power? Or will it die along with this world’s hope of survival against the mysterious magical forces waiting to take control? Find out in Mary’s first solo miniseries, brought to you by up-and-coming comics writer Josie Campbell (Future State: Green Lantern) and fan-favorite Shazam artist Evan “Doc” Shaner (Strange Adventures, Convergence: Shazam!)!

Mary Marvel getting a bigger role and becoming the new Shazam in the DC Universe makes for an exciting premise for the new miniseries, as Joshua Middleton’s gorgeous variant cover art does a great job in hyping up the character’s new role. Mary is an important character, so to see her step up from her and become the new champion of Shazam after Billy Batson’s sacrifice should make for an emotional, rewarding journey. For readers who want to see how Mary Marvel become the new Shazam, The New Champion of Shazam! #1 by DC Comics arrives in comic book stores and online retailers on August 2nd.
