Marco de Vincenzo has been named creative director of Etro. The Messina-born designer will replace the longstanding family incumbents Veronica and Kean Etro in overseeing the 1968-founded Italian house’s mainline womenswear and menswear lines, as well as all accessories.

The move comes after the Etro family last summer sold a majority stake to the private equity firm L Catterton.

De Vincenzo posted to Instagram this morning: “I’d love to share with you my happiness for being appointed creative director of Etro! Thanks to all of you who are always by my side.”

A much-admired veteran of the Milan design scene, de Vincenzo will remain in his position as leather goods head designer at Fendi, the house at which he has worked since 2000. He launched his own collection in 2009 and in 2014 received investment from LVMH — which also owns Fendi and is involved in L Catterton — before presenting his first menswear collection at Pitti Uomo in 2019.

There is no doubt that de Vincenzo is equipped to evolve Etro’s pattern-saturated aesthetic in his own distinct direction. A fabric obsessive with a particular yen for lurex, he told L’Uomo Vogue in 2019: “My way of going about things has stayed the same… my research as a designer starts from the factory and the possibilities offered by the fabric.” Today’s press release added that Kean and Veronica Etro, who have designed the house’s menswear and womenswear since 1990 and 2000 respectively, will continue to be involved with the house’s strategy along with their brother, Jacopo.

Fabrizio Cardinali, CEO of Etro, said in the release: “Through his sensitivity for colours, prints and fabrics, we are sure that Marco will be able to translate at best Etro’s extraordinary heritage into new interpretations for the brand’s different collections and also giving a new drive to the world of accessories.”
