Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul’s final fight in Star Wars: Rebels is legendary, and now it’s getting a new comic book adaptation.
Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: Rebels and Obi-Wan Kenobi from Marvel Comics
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul’s epic final battle from Star Wars: Rebels is getting retold in an all-new way, as the upcoming Star Wars: Obi Wan #2 will feature the battle between the Jedi and the villain who killed his master. In a newly teased image at this weekend’s Star Wars Celebrations, Marvel Comics shared new art for the upcoming series, showcasing the iconic Maul and Kenobi fight, getting the comic book treatment for the first time.
One of the greatest starwars fights in the entire franchise is the final battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul in the Star Wars: Rebels animatedseries. In the episode “Twin Suns,” written by Dave Filoni and Henry Gilroy, the pair’s tense meeting on Tatooine was years in the making after Maul infamously killed Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. The fight with Kenobi ends with him killing Maul after he attacks, as the Jedi Master beats him in the lightsaber battle. The defeat is a full-circle moment for Kenobi, as after watching his Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn die at the hands of Darth Maul, years later, he finally took him out. Kenobi found peace at the moment, taking Maul down with speed rather than drawing it out and then compassionately reassuring him he would protect the Chosen One as he died. Despite the “revenge,” Kenobi is not bitter in victory. Now, the fight is finally coming to the comics.
At the Star Wars Celebration event this weekend, writer Christopher Cantwell, who is tackling the new Star Wars: Obi Wan series from Marvel Comics alongside artists including Luke Ross, Ario Anindito, and Nolan Woodard, shared a new look at the final days of Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the sneak peek, Obi-Wan Kenobi reflects on his past of him, including his last fight with Darth Maul, first shown in Star Wars: Rebelsas the battle will be adapted to the comics for the first time in the series’ second issue.
Considering the Star Wars: Obi Wan series is focused on the character reflecting on his past, it makes sense that his final fight with Darth Maul would be featured, as the tease shows it seems to be juxtaposed against the fight where he lost Qui-Gon Jinn. While the last encounter between Kenobi and Maul should be similar to their epic battle in Star Wars: Rebels, it will be interesting to see it portrayed in the comics for the first time. Showing a new perspective or interpretation gives readers the chance to relive the fight through the telling of an older Kenobi during his last days.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul fight from Star Wars: Rebels getting the Marvel Comics treatment makes the issue a can’t miss read for those who want to see the epic battle play out again, but with an older Kenobi providing more details. Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi #2 by Marvel Comics arrives in comic book stores on June 22nd.
