Coming Comics: June 28, 2022

Welcome back to Upcoming Comics!

Busy week this week, so not much I can report on right now. However, I just finished one of my biggest pieces yet for this website – an interview with the upcoming writer for Detective ComicsRam V! I’m really proud of my work on this one, so I’d love it if you could check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Now, here’s what we’ve got for this week:

Coming Comics

Batman/Catwoman #12

Wedding bells are finally ringing for Batman and Catwoman! As our story concludes, the lovers prepare to take the next steps in their lives together by trading everlasting vows. The Bat/Cat wedding is here, and knowing Bruce and Selina, it’ll be anything but conventional. You won’t want to miss this final chapter of Tom King’s Batman epic!

Thoughts: An event that was promised in 2018, delivered four years later in an out-of-continuity miniseries? Yeah, sounds about right for DC. Still bitter about that.

Detective Comics #1061

Mommy’s home! With Talia al Ghul back in town, anything can happen…and the mother of Robin is here to lay down the law. Meanwhile, the Riddler’s scheme to turn Batman’s sacred city into a twisted riddle of life and death has at last been revealed…and Edward’s going to use whatever and whoever he can to turn Batman’s life upside down. Then, in the finale of “Gotham Girl, Interrupted,” Claire Clover unravels the mystery behind the Gotham Girl website…so why doesn’t she believe what she finds in the process? It’s betrayal, healing, and punches galore!

Written by Mariko Tamaki, Nadia Shammas and Sina Grace
Pencils by Ivan Reis and David Lapham
Inks by Danny Miki and David Lapham
Colors by Brad Anderson and Trish Mulvihill
Cover Art by Ivan Reis, Danny Miki and Brad Anderson

Thoughts: I know comic book covers are purely for attention-grabbing purposes, but I find it kind of a shame that Selina and Bruce’s relationship just kind of… fizzled, in continuity. Also, this is the last issue of Tamaki’s run! How has everyone felt about it?

Batman: Fortress #2

Batman and the Justice League are working desperately to save innocent lives after the arrival of a mysterious alien ship that has destabilized the entire planet. After all attempts to communicate with the unknown invaders fail, they’re left with no alternative but to fight! But can even the combined might of the Justice League and all the world’s militaries repel such an overwhelmingly superior force?

Pencils and Inks by Darick Robertson
Colors by Diego Rodriguez

Thoughts: Martian Manhunter and Batman is always a good combo! We also have too little content with Bruce and Cyborg.

Robin #15

Damian Wayne is back from the Shadow War and licking his wounds the best way a Wayne knows how…brooding (duh). But in light of the shocking death in the al Ghul family, Robin resolves to dig deeper into the world of the Demon… and a return to Lazarus Island-with Flatline at his side from him-leaves him with yet another shocking revelation!

Written by Joshua Williamson
Pencils by Roger Cruz
Inks by Norm Rapmund
Colors by Luis Guerrero

Thoughts: Talia’s role in the DC Universe is incredibly big right now – it’s honestly nice to see. The character’s an incredibly developed villain, and she’s immensely entertaining to read!

Task Force Z #9

Are we the baddies? After the shocking (but not really) betrayal by Mr. Bloom, the new Task Force Z are public enemy number one. All of Gotham is hunting for them. They are out of money, out of friends, and out of Lazarus Resin. But now they will have to face their most dangerous foe yet-and it’s one of their own!

Harley Quinn #16

You know how the whole villain origin story is usually about the “one bad day” that changed everything? I think it’s Tuesday most of the time. But what if it’s, like, a lot of bad days, and some of them were even caused by me, Harley Quinn? Well, that would be a recipe for one pretty bad villain, right? The secret origin story of a brutal new villain, Verdict, is revealed here! Though I guess it won’t be very secret once we reveal it, huh?

Written by Stephanie Phillips
Pencils and Inks by Riley Rossmo
Colors by Ivan Plascencia

Thoughts: How do you feel about the different Harley Quinn costumes? I like how the show justified the change, in that her original outfit is too tied to her her history with the Joker.

Batman: Beyond the White Knight #4

The hunt continues as Bruce Wayne searches for the most dangerous offspring in Neo-Gotham, the daughter of The Joker! Little does he know the new Batman is right behind him, waiting for just the right moment to strike and put an end to the older generation of heroes in the city. All seems to be going according to plan for Derek Powers, as his true intentions of him are revealed. Plus, Ace the Bat-Hound joins the story!

Thoughts: Awesome! The Joker’s daughter! Just what White Knight needs!

DC vs. Vampires: Killers #1

In the shadow of the new Vampire World Order, Harley Quinn rules the human underworld in this age of darkness. She has survived by only looking out for herself…but she might have just found the key to saving the world.

Written by Matthew Rosenberg
Pencils by Michael Bowden and Eduardo Mello
Inks by Eduardo Mello, Le Beau L. Underwood and Livesay
Colors by Antonio Fabela
Cover Art by Hicham Habchi – Pyroow

Thoughts: I’m a little sick of Harley inexplicably surviving all of these crazy apocalyptic events. I do n’t even dislike her, I just get frustrated by how blatant her appeal to a target audience is. Then again, what am I saying? That’s how comic books make their money!

Beyond the Bat

Welcome to Beyond the Bat! Here you can see everything else that DC is releasing this week, beyond the scope of the books we cover on the website.

Ratings

Most Excited: Robin #fifteen. Despite me not being jazzed about Shadow WarI’m excited to see where the story goes in its aftermath!

Least Excited: Batman: Beyond the White Knight #4. I don’t like this book on the best of days, and this request only made me more apprehensive.

wild cards: batman/catwoman #12. I actually quite enjoy Tom King’s endings, so I do hope this sticks the landing – but I’ve been burned by this premise before.

Best wishes, and see you in the reviews!
