Reva Originally Died In Obi-Wan Kenobi, Confirms Writer

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s original writer Stuart Beattie confirms that his first scripts for the eventual Disney+ series included Darth Vader killing Reva.

The original script for Obi-Wan Kenobi included Reva dying in the end at Darth Vader’s hand. Ewan McGregor’s return to starwars came with plenty of new revelations about the franchise’s established canon. Not only did the Disney+ series feature two rematches between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader, but it also showed Kenobi help save a young Leia Organa and encounter the Inquisitors. The latter are deadly Jedi hunters under Vader’s command, and Obi-Wan Kenobi introduced a new Inquisitor to canon through the Third Sister, Reva, played by Moses Ingram.

Reva’s role in Obi-Wan Kenobi was substantial, as she was the mastermind behind kidnapping Leia to draw Kenobi out of hiding. Viewers watched her hunt down the legendary Jedi in an attempt to prove herself to Darth Vader, who she secretly hated since she was a Jedi youngling during Order 66. Heading into the series, though, many expected Reva to die in Obi-Wan Kenobi since she is not mentioned in any other canon materials that come after these events. Despite being stabbed by Darth Vader in episode 5, Reva survived and lived through the final event.

It is now confirmed that Reva’s death was originally supposed to happen in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Writer Stuart Beattie, who originally worked on continuing Obi-Wan’s story as a movie trilogy, recently spoke to TheDirect and revealed how his plans for Moses Ingram’s Inquisitor character were different. He mentioned that he created Reva while writing the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie script and that Darth Vader originally killed Reva with his lightsaber. Beattie says that Reva’s death from her was meant to come after she saves the Jedi after claiming to have killed Obi-Wan, ending Vader’s pursuit of his former master from him.

Yeah, killed by Vader at the end of it. Yeah, I wanted this story, I wanted her story to end. I wanted Reva to play her part of her in the Kenobi-Vader story, which was, essentially, at the end, she was the one that allowed Vader, basically told Vader to stop hunting Kenobi. You know, she ended the obsession Vader had with Kenobi. She claimed it was over, it’s done. So that was, that was her role to play. And she’d done so many terrible things, I felt her she had to die [laughs]. You can only redeem so much.

Lucasfilm may have changed Obi-Wan Kenobi from a potential movie trilogy to a limited series on Disney+, but Beattie’s script was still used as the basis for this adventure. While many of his ideas were used in the final product, killing Reva was not one of them. It is not known if Lucasfilm ever intended to have the Obi-Wan Kenobi show include Reva’s death. Rumors suggested that the show’s ending was altered to leave her alive. Regardless, not killing Reva was just one of the ways the series deviated from what Beattie planned to do. For instance, his version of him had Obi-Wan tell Reva that Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker, which is reversed in the show.

Reva’s ambiguous fate in the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale is one of the show’s biggest lingering questions. It does seem that it would have made more sense for Darth Vader and the Grand Inquisitor’s combined ruthlessness to end with Reva’s death. However, Moses Ingram dealt with severe harassment after Reva’s debut. Most Obi-Wan Kenobi viewers enjoyed the character and her arc. Thanks to Lucasfilm’s decision to change Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s scripts and not kill Reva, there are plenty of opportunities to see her again.
