Delaware County District Library director George Needham retiring

Intrigued by reading at a young age, George Needham’s first job was in a library at age 16, and he’s still at it.

Needham, whose 67th birthday is July 3, has been the director of the Delaware County District Library since 2015 and plans to turn the page – retiring effective Oct. 1.

Needham lived three blocks from a library branch during his childhood in Buffalo, New York, and said it became a favorite spot, a place where he could learn about the world.

“As soon as I was old enough to realize that you could actually work in a library, that those folks weren’t just volunteers, I started hassling the librarian for a job,” he said. “I turned 16, and within two months I had a job there. And like I said, I never left.”
