Parker Library has programs in August | News

The Parker Public Library has announced a calendar of events for the month of August. One of the stated goals for the library when they received a grant in June was they wanted to expand some of their summer programs into August.

On June 3, the town council approved accepting the grant, which came to $227,022.50. The funds are from the AZ on Track Summer Camp Program through the Governor’s Office.

Library spokesperson Fenix ​​Markel said they were one of 12 libraries to receive this funding, and they received the largest amount. Among the things they plan to do with those funds, Markel said, was expand the reading program into August, add Saturday programs, and make all the programs and events free.

Library Director Tracy McConnell said she first learned of these funds when she was contacted by Lisa Lewis, the President of the ALA. While most grant applications are a lengthy process, McConnell said Lewis called her and asked if she was interested. When McConnell said she was ella, Lewis asked her to send some information regarding the library by that same evening.

In a memo to the council, McConnell explained some of the specifics the library would like to spend the grant money on. They included the following:

$30,000 for 20 new computers, to be split between the children’s and teens room.

$50,000 for new furniture for the children’s and teen rooms.

$10,809 in additional funds for the summer program.

$6,700 for food and snacks for all programs.

$17,000 for food cards for families.

$1,351 for transportation for field trips.

$10,000 for gas cards for families.

$68,106 for additional materials, including items in Spanish, STEM materials, projects, audio books, games and puzzles.

The Parker Public Library is located at 1001 S. Navajo Avenue, across Agency Road from Pop Harvey Park. They’re open from 10 am to 7 pm, Monday through Thursday, and from 8 am to 12 noon on Saturday.
